We have a lot going on at church this spring! Here is some basic info for your family, so that you can carry on the discussion during the week at home.

What did we do in church school on Sunday?

First, we checked in on the veggies. It is fun to see how the are growing! Then, in the Worship Room, we watched three short videos on the CROP Walk. Next, we split into age-specific classrooms and learned about Jesus’s brother James and read a scripture from the Bible that he wrote. Finally, we helped make some of the decorations for VBC. It was a busy, busy day!

What is the CROP Walk? (this is written for little kids to understand)

The CROP Walk is a way to make money for people who are hungry and thirsty. You ask people you know for money, go for a big walk with church friends, and give the money to those who need it.

This year we are trying something new to try to get the kids more involved. We will be doing our own CROP Walk on Sunday, June 3, during church school time! This is for all kids, grades PK-12. We will end at a playground. It will be fun!

What did we learn from the videos?

We learned that when we are told to “love our neighbors,” that it really means EVERYONE in the world, not just people on our street. We also learned that the money that is raised is used to show people how to garden, and how to take care of bees, chickens and other animals that can be used for food. In some places, the money is used to make a system of pipes so that people can get water more easily. Watch some of the great videos produced by CROP.

What does my child need to do to participate?

Please pick up a permission slip, a collection envelope, and a donor form from Patty at church school. Simply ask people you know to sponsor your walk, for any amount of money they want to give. Record their names and information on the donor form. On June 3, bring the materials to church school. We will go for our walk and all the money will be donated!

What else did we do at church school?
We made some of the decorations for VBC! The older kids constructed giant palm trees! The youngest kids made sea creatures out of coffee filters. When you come to VBC, see if you can find the things you helped make!

How can we pray about this?

You can make up your own prayers using this to start:

Dear God, Thank you for giving us food and clean water to drink. We pray for all our neighbors, all over the world, that need food and water. Help our vegetable plants to grow big and strong so that we can donate them to people nearby who are hungry. Thank you for teaching us about James, the brother of Jesus. He tells us that we need to have faith in Jesus and do good deeds. Help us to do good things for other people. Finally, we pray that a lot of kids will come to VBC this year and learn about Jesus. Amen.

What scripture did we read this week?

James 2:14-17 New International Version (NIV)

Faith and Deeds

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
