It's Not really About the Budget
Why this fall at ACC, we're talking about hearts instead of dollars
Every fall, something familiar happens in churches. The season for talking about giving rolls around, and a little knot forms in a lot of stomachs. Some people worry about sounding like they're asking for money. Others worry about being asked. Most of us brace for a few weeks of awkward math.
This year at ACC, we'd like to try it differently.
Our theme is There Our Hearts Will Be, and it comes from something Jesus said: "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." It's easy to hear that as a scolding about money. But read it again. He's not saying money is the problem. He's noticing something true about people: what we put our time, energy, and resources into tells us what we really care about. And over time, it shapes what we care about, too.
Generosity is a way of living
Think of the most generous person you know. Chances are, it isn't only about what they give. It's how they pay attention. They show up when you're having a hard time. They remember your kid's name. They make room at the table.
Researchers who study generosity say much the same thing: it's less a single act than a habit of the heart, one we learn and practice over time. It can look like money, but it can also look like time, encouragement, or a listening ear. A pledge card is just one small way of saying, "I'm in."
So the question for this season isn't "How do we cover the budget?" It's a gentler and more honest one: What do I love, and what do I want my life to say about it?
What you won't hear from us
You won't hear "we're behind, so please help." Nobody wants to be on the receiving end of a guilt trip, and nobody should have to give out of pressure. We'd much rather tell you about the good that happens here: the meals shared, the people cared for, the neighbors we show up for. Then we'll invite you to be part of it, if and as you're able, because it's something you want to do.
How you can join in?
Come as you are. Each Sunday this month, and into November, we'll look at a story or teaching about the heart, what we trust, what we love, and what weighs on us. There's no homework and no pop quiz. Newcomers and longtime members are equally welcome.
In early November, a packet will be made available with a card for anyone who'd like to share what they plan to give in the coming year. On Sunday, November 8, we'll gather to celebrate together and share a meal. Whatever you decide, large or small or not this year, you're part of us.
Money will come up, because it's part of real life. But it won't be the center. The center is a simple question worth sitting with: where is my heart, and where do I want it to be?
We'd love to wonder about that with you.
