What I Wish My Parents Knew

Atkinson Congregational Church to Hold Screening of “What I Wish My Parents Knew”

Atkinson Congregational Church, along with Southern Rockingham Coalition for Healthy Youth (SoRock), are co-hosting a free event, “Tell My Story,” on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at the church from 6:30-8 p.m. With the goal to help parents better understand how to support their children’s mental health, the program features the film, “What I Wish My Parents Knew,” followed by a discussion led by local, mental health professionals.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with light refreshments served.

“We’re living at a time when anxiety, depression, and suicide seem to be rising at an alarming rate in young people,” said Pastor Jim Thomas. “This event is meant to help parents and grandparents become more educated on sensitive mental health issues, while being able to ask questions and find resources in a safe environment.”

“What I Wish My Parents Knew,” which is not available for general public streaming outside of the event, explores the individual struggles of 10 young people dealing with anxiety and depression.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates for Americans ages 10-24 rose 62 percent from 2007 to 2021.
