Ashes To Go

ASHES TO GO

ATKINSON, N.H., Feb. 17, 2021 – Atkinson Congregational Church will be hosting its “Ashes to Go” on Ash Wednesday, March 2, 2022, between 8-9 a.m. and 4-5 p.m. Now in its fifth year, Ashes to Go has become one of the church’s most attended and appreciated offerings. A traditional service will also be held that evening at 7 p.m. at the church and online.

For Ashes to Go on Ash Wednesday, local residents and those in surrounding communities are invited to drive into the church’s parking lot at 101 Main St. during set hours to receive the imposition of ashes and a blessing from Pastor Jim Thomas. If desired, drivers will also be welcome to donate grocery products and perishable foods as they drive up. The church will give these to local food banks.

Because of COVID-19 risks, no direct contact will be made when the pastor delivers the imposition of ashes. His process will include using disposable gloves and a fresh cotton swab for each person in the car who receives the ashes. He’ll also be wearing a face mask – strongly encouraged for everyone participating in the event.

“Whether you never attend church, go occasionally or regularly, Ashes to Go is an easy and convenient way to experience the holy day as we enter the season of Lent,” said Pastor Jim Thomas. “Although not required, we’re grateful for those who donate grocery and perishable items if they desire.”

A traditional Ash Wednesday service will also be held that evening at 7 p.m., in person and livestreamed at https://atkinsoncc.org/livestream.

Ashes to Go has been increasing in popularity across the country since 2007, when a church in St. Louis began distributing ashes outside a coffee house.
